Several new emergency response units are expected to arrive at O'Hare Airport, with additional equipment currently in the planning stages. These updates reflect ongoing efforts to enhance safety and operational readiness at one of the busiest airports in the country.
A new ambulance, designated as Rescue 1's Unit 26, has already been deployed. Additional ambulances for Units 16 and 59 are on their way and should be operational soon. The Aviation Department has also entered into a five-year agreement with Oshkosh Corporation for up to eight Striker ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) units. The first unit is scheduled to arrive in August and will be a 3000-gallon 6×6 model similar to those already in service at O'Hare. A second unit is expected before the end of 2010, and depending on potential changes to FAA regulations, future units could be larger 4500-gallon 8×8 models.
In addition to firefighting equipment, the airport is also acquiring new support tools. A large mobile ventilation fan is being ordered to improve air quality and safety during emergencies. A new mobile command post (Unit 2-7-8) is also in development, designed to serve as a central hub during large-scale incidents.
At Rescue 3, a new rehab unit (Unit 5-7-3) has been introduced to assist with patient recovery and medical care. Meanwhile, Mass Casualty Unit 8-8-1 at Rescue 1 is now using a newly acquired (used) Bluebird bus, enhancing its capacity to manage large numbers of injured individuals.
On the transportation front, Battalion 6 has received a new 2010 Ford Expedition, improving mobility for senior personnel. Two additional units, 2-9-9 and 2-9-11, have also been equipped with new 2010 Ford F150 4-door pickup trucks featuring bed covers, boosting their versatility and functionality.
These upgrades highlight the continuous investment in modernizing emergency services at O'Hare, ensuring that the airport remains well-prepared for any situation.
