This state-of-the-art vehicle is designed to provide critical support during large-scale emergencies or events. According to Harold Damron, the county’s emergency management director, this new unit represents a major leap forward from previous models. “There’s essentially no comparison between this one and what we had before,†he said. The vehicle was showcased at the county office building in downtown Joliet, where officials got their first look at its impressive size and capabilities. Measuring nearly as long as a full-sized bus, the Incident Command Center is built on a Freightliner chassis and powered by a Cummins turbo diesel engine. It's equipped with advanced technology to support incident commanders, who could be from fire, police, or other emergency response agencies. Inside, there are 10 workstations for key personnel, along with a comprehensive communication system. The unit includes multiple radios operating on different frequencies used by local agencies. These radios are housed in a central rack and controlled via a computerized network, allowing users to switch channels through software on any laptop within the vehicle. This system enables incident commanders to communicate efficiently without having to handle physical radios. For instance, if the fire chief needs to access a specific frequency, they can simply open the software and use a headset to make calls—streamlining the process and reducing potential delays. In addition to its primary role, the vehicle also serves as a backup communications hub in case of disruptions to 911 or other public safety networks. The rear of the unit contains three fully functional 911-capable workstations, ready to be deployed wherever needed. Priced at around $1.15 million, the vehicle was funded primarily through grants, with the remaining 20% coming from 911 surcharge funds.
