Will County has introduced a new mobile command center designed to provide essential support during large-scale emergencies. This state-of-the-art vehicle, which is 46 feet long and 13.5 feet tall, weighs over 42,000 pounds and was built by Farber Specialty Vehicles of Ohio. It’s equipped with advanced technology that makes it far superior to previous units, according to Harold Damron, the county’s emergency management director.
The Incident Command Center can be deployed directly to an incident site, offering a fully functional base for incident commanders—whether they are from fire, police, or other agencies. Inside, there are ten workstations for key personnel, along with a sophisticated radio system that allows users to switch between frequencies using a centralized control panel.
“This system lets us manage all the different communication channels efficiently,†Damron explained. “Commanders can access the software on any laptop in the vehicle and choose the frequency they need without touching the actual radios.â€
In addition to its primary role as a command post, the vehicle also serves as a backup communications hub in case of disruptions to 911 or other public safety networks. The rear of the unit includes three full 911-capable stations to ensure continuity of service.
Funded largely through grants, the $1.15 million vehicle was partially supported by 911 surcharge funds. Its advanced features make it a critical asset for emergency response in Will County, providing flexibility, reliability, and cutting-edge technology in high-stress situations.
