Several new emergency response units are expected to arrive at O'Hare Airport, with additional equipment currently in the planning stages. These updates reflect ongoing efforts to enhance safety and operational readiness across the facility.
Rescue 1 has already introduced a new ambulance, designated as Unit 26, into service. Ambulances for Units 16 and 59 are also expected to arrive soon, further strengthening the airport’s medical response capabilities.
The Aviation Department has secured a five-year contract with Oshkosh for up to eight Striker ARFF (Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting) units. The first unit is scheduled to arrive in August and will be a 3000-gallon 6×6 model, similar to those already in use at O’Hare. A second unit is expected before the end of 2010. Future units may vary in size depending on potential changes to FAA regulations, with two units possibly being 4500-gallon 8×8 models.
A large mobile ventilation unit is currently being ordered for the airport, which will improve air quality and safety during emergencies. Additionally, a new mobile command post (Unit 2-7-8) is in the design phase, aiming to provide better coordination during large-scale incidents.
At Rescue 3, a new rehab unit (Unit 5-7-3) has been deployed, supporting injured personnel. Meanwhile, Mass Casualty Unit 8-8-1 at Rescue 1 is now operating with a newly acquired used Bluebird bus, enhancing its capacity for mass casualty scenarios.
Battalion 6 has received a new 2010 Ford Expedition, improving mobility and communication. Units 2-9-9 and 2-9-11 have also been equipped with new 2010 Ford F150 4-door pickup trucks featuring bed covers, offering greater versatility for field operations.
Photos of some of these new units are available, including the Chicago Ambulance 26, the Mass Casualty Bus 881, the CFD 2-9-11, and the Rehab Unit 5-7-3, showcasing the progress being made at O’Hare.
