In recent years, the food and pharmaceutical machinery industry in Wenzhou has experienced remarkable growth. By 2006, the industry's total output reached 5.1 billion yuan, reflecting a 28.3% increase from the previous year, and it captured one-third of the national market share. By 2010, the sector was expected to reach an output value of 10 billion yuan, with foreign trade exports surpassing 90 million U.S. dollars. This rapid development has led to the emergence of a strong industry cluster, positioning Wenzhou as a key player aiming for the national "gold business card" status.
The roots of this industry trace back to the 1960s, when it played a crucial role in Wenzhou’s second economic wave. According to data from the Wenzhou Food and Pharmaceutical Machinery Industry Association, the city is home to 706 enterprises engaged in the production of food and pharmaceutical machinery, employing over 50,000 people. These companies have developed more than 1,000 leading products, accounting for 40% of the national market. Notable products such as Yaguang’s Pharmaceutical Sterile Crusher, Tianyu’s Multifunctional Retorts, Wenxiong’s Multi-Counter Countercurrent Macroporous Resin Adsorption Columns, and Jinbang’s Automatic Chromatography Units are among the top in China. Some of these companies have even gained international recognition, with Tianyu supplying equipment to global giants like DuPont and Novozymes, while Yaguang has set national standards for its products, holding a 70% market share in certain categories.
Currently, the industry includes 19 technology-based companies, among them four high-tech enterprises in Zhejiang Province and five firms with annual outputs exceeding 100 million yuan. These companies have secured 160 national patents. In March of this year, the “Eleventh Five-Year†National Science and Technology Support Program for Traditional Chinese Medicine Equipment and Key Technologies was launched in Longwan District. Once completed, this project will significantly enhance the manufacturing capabilities of traditional Chinese medicine equipment and further boost the innovative strength of Wenzhou’s pharmaceutical machinery sector.
Recently, Wenzhou’s food and pharmaceutical machinery industry has made a strong impression at domestic exhibitions. At the China Food Expo in Ningbo last November, over 300 Wenzhou-made food and pharmaceutical machinery products attracted significant interest from African buyers. This year, the Wenzhou food and drug machinery group plans to participate in major international events in the U.S., India, and the pharmaceutical biotech exhibition, aiming to expand its global footprint and explore broader international markets.
