On November 8th at 11:08 AM, China Metallurgical Saidi successfully delivered the first batch of molten iron from the Baosteel Pugang relocation Luojing COREX C-3000 smelting reduction ironmaking project. This marks a major milestone as it is China's first implementation of the COREX C3000 technology, which is also the world's largest plant design and the main system for this kind of process.
The facility has an annual production capacity of 1.5 million tons of molten iron, surpassing the combined output of the four existing COREX C2000 units in operation globally—located at the Saldanha Steel Plant in South Africa, Pohang Steel Plant in South Korea, and Jindal Steel Plant in India. The new project represents nearly double the capacity of these existing plants, making it the largest COREX-based ironmaking project in the world to date.
COREX is the only industrial-scale smelting reduction technology that has been successfully applied in real-world production. It allows for the direct production of hot metal from coal and iron ore, bypassing the traditional blast furnace method. Compared to conventional processes, COREX offers significant advantages such as lower coke consumption, reduced environmental impact, lower energy use, and greater flexibility in raw material selection. These features make it a promising solution for sustainable steel production.
China Metallurgical Saidi has long been committed to researching non-blast furnace ironmaking technologies.
