The devastation in Kathmandu this month has been heartbreaking. The loss of life and destruction of homes and infrastructure have left many in shock. Yet, amid the tragedy, there is a strong and inspiring global response. The U.S. government has pledged $10 million in aid, telecom companies are offering free calls to Nepal, and the U.S. Air Force has deployed over 100 troops, including urban search-and-rescue teams, to support relief efforts.
As an organization focused on using design and technology for good, the Autodesk Foundation is looking for ways to contribute meaningfully. We believe that leveraging our expertise in architecture, engineering, and digital design can make a real difference in rebuilding efforts. Many tech companies are also stepping up—Google and Facebook are helping people check in with loved ones, while PayPal is enabling donations through its platform, reaching millions of users.
Rebuilding after a disaster is more than just clearing rubble—it’s about creating safer, more resilient communities. That’s why we’re supporting organizations like Build Change, which has been working for over a decade to help communities rebuild with earthquake-resistant designs. Their work in Nepal is already underway, and they're mobilizing a local team to assist with recovery.
Here are some ways you can get involved and make a meaningful impact:
1. **Donate to Build Change** – This is one of the most effective ways to ensure safe, long-term rebuilding in Nepal. Their experience in post-disaster construction makes them a key partner in the recovery process.
2. **Support the Creative Market Community** – For the month of May, nearly 500 shops on Creative Market are donating a portion of their earnings to Nepal relief efforts. With matching from the Autodesk Foundation, the first $20,000 will be doubled. All funds go to All Hands, a nonprofit dedicated to both immediate and long-term disaster recovery.
3. **Share Photos from the Pixlr Challenge** – Pixlr is donating $20,000 to Build Change, and the company encouraged users to participate in a photo challenge themed “Message for Nepal.†Sharing these images helps raise awareness and support for the cause.
At Autodesk, we’re not only funding these initiatives but also encouraging our employees to volunteer and contribute directly. We know that every effort counts, and together, we can help create a safer future for those affected by this disaster.
Natural disasters will continue to happen, but with smarter design and stronger collaboration, we can build more resilient communities. Supporting these efforts isn’t just about helping today—it’s about ensuring a better tomorrow for generations to come.
