By Joe Speicher, Executive Director, Autodesk Foundation The devastation in Kathmandu this month has been heartbreaking. The loss of life and the destruction of homes and infrastructure have left a deep mark on the city and its people. Yet, despite the tragedy, the global response has been inspiring. The U.S. government has pledged $10 million in aid, telecom companies are offering free communication services to those in Nepal, and the U.S. Air Force has deployed over 100 troops, including urban search-and-rescue teams, to support relief efforts. Charitable organizations around the world, including the Autodesk Foundation, are working tirelessly to assist. Technology companies are leveraging their unique strengths to make a difference. Google and Facebook are using their massive user bases to help locate and confirm the safety of individuals in Nepal. PayPal, with over 150 million active users, is facilitating donations and covering costs through its platform, making it easier for people to contribute. We believe that design and the built environment can play a critical role in the long-term recovery of Kathmandu. That’s why we focus our support on organizations that align with our mission—those who understand how thoughtful design can rebuild not just structures, but also communities. The Design Opportunity Once emergency supplies are delivered, temporary shelters are erected, and the rubble is cleared, the real challenge begins—rebuilding the city’s infrastructure, homes, and businesses to restore normalcy. Too often, this phase is overlooked or poorly managed. But there are organizations with years of experience in this kind of work, and they are already mobilizing. One such organization is Build Change, a nonprofit partner of the Autodesk Foundation with over a decade of experience in post-disaster reconstruction. They work closely with local governments to develop and enforce earthquake-resistant building codes, and then collaborate with local contractors to show how these buildings can be constructed efficiently and affordably. A day after the earthquake, they announced the formation of a Nepal response team. We strongly encourage anyone who believes in the power of good design to support this vital work. How to Help Many people want to help, and they’ve asked us how they can make a meaningful difference. Here are some ways you can contribute: Autodesk is deeply committed to supporting the recovery in Nepal, both through our partnerships like Build Change and through the efforts of our own employees, who are actively donating and organizing volunteer initiatives. Together, we can make a lasting impact and help build a safer future for the people of Nepal. Natural disasters will continue to occur, but by investing in resilient design and construction, we can protect lives and communities for generations to come. It’s not just about rebuilding—it’s about creating something better.
