APE Pumps, a South African company, has successfully completed the production of its largest water engineering pump to date. The project was secured through a contract worth 8 million rand (approximately $1.28 million) from a U.S.-based engineering management firm. The order includes three massive 1600 mm single-stage vertical turbo pumps, each weighing 17 tons. These pumps are set to be installed at a dam located 200 km north of Basra in southern Iraq as part of a major pumping station upgrade. They will replace aging equipment that has been in operation for over three decades.
Each pump is designed to handle a flow rate of 4,000 cubic meters per second, with a head of 20 meters and a motor power of 1,300 watts. The construction features cast iron drums, stainless steel shafts, and impellers—standard materials chosen for their durability and reliability.
One of the key challenges in the installation process was fitting the new pumps into the existing sump of the pumping station and connecting them to the current pipeline system. To overcome this, APE engineers modified the manufacturing process and developed a custom foundation that aligns with the original structure. This innovation allowed for seamless integration without requiring major infrastructure changes.
According to sales manager Dave Murphy, APE Pumps can deliver the units in just 22 weeks, significantly faster than competitors who typically take 40 to 45 weeks. This efficiency not only saves time but also reduces overall project costs and minimizes downtime during the upgrade. The project highlights APE's commitment to innovation, precision, and customer satisfaction in large-scale water engineering solutions.
