In recent years, the trend of coal companies acquiring chemical firms has been common, but this year witnessed a surprising shift: chemical companies, especially those like Hubei Yihua Group, have taken the initiative to acquire coal mines. This marks a new trend in the industry, as chemical firms seek to strengthen their coal-chemical supply chains and expand their operations.
On November 7, Hubei Yihua Group announced that its subsidiary, Guizhou Yihua Chemical Co., Ltd., acquired two coal mines in Qianxinan Prefecture, Guizhou Province—Hengtai Coal Mine and Ruixin Coal—for 110 million yuan and 40 million yuan respectively. These acquisitions significantly boost the company’s coal reserves. Hengtai currently produces 300,000 tons of raw coal annually, with plans to double output to 600,000 tons next year. Ruixin Coal is expected to reach an annual production of 450,000 tons soon. According to Yihua, these acquisitions not only secure coal supplies for its ammonia and urea projects but also bring substantial profits.
Similarly, Guangxi Liuzhou Chemical Industry Co., Ltd. signed an agreement on November 6 to acquire 90% equity in Xinyi Mining from Guizhou Aneng Industrial and Mining Co., Ltd. The company invested 84.73 million yuan in cash for the deal. Xinyi Coal Mine has recoverable reserves of about 45.7 million tons and is expected to produce up to 900,000 tons annually. The acquisition aligns with Liuzhou’s earlier plan to secure coal supplies for its shell gasification project. With this move, one-third of the coal needed will be self-sufficient, boosting profitability.
Before that, Sichuan Lutianhua successfully implemented a "gas-to-coal" project and extended its coal-chemical chain into Inner Mongolia. After completing a 200,000-ton-per-year dimethyl ether project, the company made progress in acquiring local coal resources and now holds exploration rights.
According to reports, several top chemical companies, including Inner Mongolia Lantai Industrial and Hubei Shuanghuan Technology, have also started acquiring shares in coal enterprises. Many more are actively seeking control over coal mines to secure their supply chains.
Industry analysts note that chemical companies are increasingly pursuing coal mines due to long-term strategic needs. Securing upstream coal resources ensures stable development of the coal-chemical sector. Additionally, since the beginning of this year, government policies have restricted coal production growth, making it more difficult for chemical firms to rely on external suppliers. Acquiring coal mines allows them to maintain a steady supply of raw materials and avoid potential shortages.
