On February 26, Yuchai Group, China’s leading diesel engine manufacturer, unveiled its first domestically developed diesel engine with independent intellectual property rights—the YC4W—at the Yuchai Machinery strategy release and marketing service conference in 2006. This milestone marked a significant breakthrough for China’s domestic engine industry, filling a critical gap in the market. Delegates and industry experts attended the event, offering praise and insights on Yuchai’s past achievements and future vision.
Zhou Zhenqiu, General Manager of Yuchai Group, highlighted that 2005 was a pivotal year for the company. With annual sales exceeding 12.1 billion yuan, a 12% increase from the previous year, and the joint-stock company selling 230,000 engines—up 16% year-on-year—Yuchai achieved remarkable growth. Despite challenging market conditions, the company established itself as a standout player in the industry, creating what many call the “Yuchai phenomenon.â€
Under the leadership of Yu Ping, who became Chairman in 2005, Yuchai underwent major reforms. Strategic initiatives focused on property rights restructuring, system improvements, and talent development. These efforts not only boosted innovation but also strengthened Yuchai’s position in both R&D and market competitiveness. Chairman Yu Ping personally engaged with customers, reinforcing strategic partnerships and driving the company forward.
Kao Xiong, Secretary of the CPC Yulin Municipal Committee, praised Yuchai as a key player in the region’s industrial landscape. The local government has consistently supported Yuchai’s growth, and plans are underway to establish an autonomous economic development zone centered around Yuchai Industrial Park, which will integrate automotive parts, logistics, and more. The park is expected to expand significantly in the coming years.
Dagu Junming, Vice President of Dongfeng Motor Co., Ltd., emphasized the long-standing and successful partnership between Yuchai and Dongfeng. Their collaboration spans product planning, R&D, procurement, and after-sales services, with mutual trust and shared goals. Recent visits and discussions have further strengthened their cooperation.
Feng Xingfu, Deputy General Manager of Beijing Bus (Group) Co., Ltd., highlighted Yuchai’s leadership in quality, performance, and environmental standards. Beijing Bus recently purchased new environmentally friendly vehicles meeting Euro IV emission standards, showcasing Yuchai’s commitment to green technology. These vehicles will serve the 2008 Olympic Games, marking another milestone for the company.
Dr. Li Qin, Senior Technical Consultant of Yuchai, explained the significance of the YC4W engine, which meets Euro IV standards and matches European emissions levels. Developed through collaboration with German FEV, the engine represents a breakthrough in compact design and performance. Yuchai chose SCR technology for its efficiency and environmental benefits, emphasizing long-term infrastructure planning for broader adoption.
Jin Xiangjun, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Yulin Municipal Committee and Mayor, reiterated the city’s support for Yuchai, positioning it as a core driver of economic growth. Efforts are underway to develop Yuchai Industrial Park and improve the business environment through policy support and infrastructure upgrades.
Zhang Xiaoyu, Vice President of the China Machinery Industry Federation, acknowledged Yuchai’s role in promoting technological progress. He stressed the importance of independent innovation and sustainable development, urging the industry to focus on low-energy and new-energy technologies. Yuchai’s path of self-reliance and integrated innovation offers a model for future growth.
At the event, Li Tiansheng introduced the new engine to Zhang Xiaoyu, while Wu Qiwei presented Yuchai’s Euro III diesel engine to guests. These moments underscored the company’s ongoing commitment to innovation and leadership in the internal combustion engine sector.
