Recently, the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Program's special domestic research project, "Using Electron Cycling to Control the Study of Magnetic Fluid Instability," kicked off in Hefei, marking the beginning of the research on the control technology of magnetic fluid instability in China. Representatives of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, representatives of the project undertakers, project responsibility experts, members of the project expert team, project managers, project leaders, and key academic leaders from the Project Reliance Department attended the kick-off meeting.

Electron cyclotron is characterized by high frequency and high power. It is one of the most effective and technically attractive fusion plasma heating methods. The project combines the major demand of high-power long-pulse operation of the EAST Tokamak device “EAST” and the advanced requirements of ITER-related advanced operation modes to build high-power electronic cyclotron resonance heating/electronics on the EAST device. A convolute current drive system was developed to perform experimental research on controlling the instability of magnetic fluid under high-parameter long-pulse conditions, and to develop a magnetic fluid instability control technique under steady-state operation. Through the implementation of this project, we can provide important experience and data for the safe operation of ITER in the future, which will make our country lead the world in tokamak advanced plasma steady-state operation research.
