Recently, Winterthur Engine Co., Ltd. (WinGD) announced that the company's dual-fuel low-speed machine with X-DF low-pressure intake will power the world's first LNG-powered Aframax crude oil ship.
The world's first LNG-powered Aframax crude oil ship is equipped with a dual-fuel low-speed machine
According to a contract signed in March 2017, Russia's largest shipping company SCF Group has selected WinGD's 7X62DF dual-fuel engine to provide propulsion for a series of four LNG-powered Aframax oil tankers.
WinGD CEO Martin Wernli said, “This order represents the SCF Group's confidence and recognition of the X-DF engine and will help SCF Group improve the environmentally friendly Afra oil tanker. This order also conveys clarity. The signal, our low-pressure lean burn technology has become the industry standard for all LNG powerboats, not just LNG carriers."
The 7X62DF engine is rated at 13,800 kW / 86 rpm and is designed to operate with LNG, heavy fuel oil, distillate fuel or mixed liquid fuel. It meets IMO Tier 3 NOx emission limits in gas fuel mode when burning liquid fuel mode. Can meet IMO Tier 2 emission requirements. In order to make the liquid fuel mode also meet IMO Tier 3 emission requirements, the contract also specifies the 7X62DF engine to supply a low pressure selective catalytic reduction aftertreatment system.
It is reported that in addition to engine design, WinGD will also supply engine diagnostic systems that can improve engine reliability through monitoring, reduce fuel costs through engine performance optimization, and extend the expected overhaul interval of engine components.
The Afghan crude oil ship has a capacity of 114,000 dwt and is designed to be 1A ice class and will operate mainly in the Baltic and North Sea regions. With the 7X62DF engine, tankers can sail global routes, including pollution emission control zones.
It is worth mentioning that compared with the engine equipped with high pressure gas injection, the low pressure air intake technology used in this time means that the gas fuel system of the engine does not need to use the high temperature electric drive cryopump, which greatly reduces the procurement and installation of the fuel system. Cost and power consumption, the size of the auxiliary equipment on board is also reduced. The WX72DF has successfully passed the type approval on March 22 this year. At present, 7 machines have been built, all of which have completed the workshop test.
It is understood that these new ships will be built by Hyundai Heavy Industries Sanhu Shipyard, and the 7X62DF engine will be manufactured by Hyundai Heavy Industries Engine and Machinery.
