On the afternoon of January 10, 2008, Song General, a Henan-based agent, accompanied Wang Longkang, Chairman of Carter Heavy Industry, along with technical experts and sales managers, for their second visit to a coal mine in Dengfeng. Guided by the general manager of the mine’s engineering project, they descended into the coal mine to assess the conditions firsthand. The coal seam measured over 30 meters in thickness and was classified as a “three soft†coal area—characterized by a soft top layer, soft coal layer, and soft bottom layer. During tunneling, the upper layer tended to collapse, while the lower layer was prone to sinking, making excavation and support extremely challenging. This type of coal mine accounts for about 40% of the coal mines in Henan Province. However, at that time, mechanical excavation and support were not feasible, forcing workers to rely on manual methods. With a team of more than 10 people per shift, only about 2 meters of progress could be made daily, which was highly inefficient.
After conducting an on-site inspection, leaders and technical teams from Carter Heavy Industries concluded that improving efficiency in such environments required simultaneous excavation and support. They believed that using mechanical solutions could significantly enhance productivity. As a result, Carter Heavy Industry entered into a cooperation agreement with the coal mine to jointly develop a “digging and supporting synchronous machine.†This innovative model involved modifying Caterpillar’s EBZ30 or EBZ35 roadheaders by integrating hydraulic quick support systems, enabling real-time excavation and support. If successfully developed, this technology would mark a breakthrough for China's “three soft†coal mines, transitioning them from manual labor to modern mechanical operations. It would bring much-needed efficiency and safety improvements to an industry long reliant on outdated methods.
