On the afternoon of January 10, 2008, Song General, a Henan-based agent, accompanied Wang Longkang, chairman of Carter Heavy Industry, along with technicians and sales managers, to visit a coal mine in Dengfeng for the second time. The team was led by the general manager of the coal mine's engineering project, and they personally descended into the mine to assess the situation firsthand. The coal seam there was over 30 meters thick and belonged to the so-called "three soft" coal area—characterized by a soft top layer, a soft coal layer, and a soft bottom layer. During tunneling, the top layer tended to collapse, while the bottom layer was prone to sinking, making excavation and support extremely challenging. This kind of condition accounts for about 40% of coal mines in Henan Province. Currently, mechanical excavation and support methods are not viable, so manual labor is still widely used. With teams of more than 10 workers per shift, only about 2 meters of progress can be made daily, which is highly inefficient.
After conducting on-site inspections, leaders and technical experts from Carter Heavy Industries concluded that improving efficiency in such mines required simultaneous excavation and support. They believed it was theoretically possible to use mechanical solutions to enhance productivity. As a result, Carter Heavy Industry entered into a cooperation agreement with the coal mine to jointly develop a "digging and supporting synchronous machine." This system would involve modifying Caterpillar Heavy Industries' EBZ30 or EBZ35 roadheaders by adding hydraulic quick support mechanisms, enabling excavation and support to occur simultaneously. If successfully developed, this machine would be the first of its kind in China, bringing significant benefits to the country's "three soft" coal mines. It would help replace manual operations and usher these mines into an era of modern, mechanized mining.
