Over 2,500 global business leaders and experts from the Design and Make industries share their insights and strategies in the latest annual survey results SAN FRANCISCO, April 24, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — According to Autodesk’s 2023 State of Design & Make report, released today, leaders and professionals from industries that design and build places, objects, and experiences are showing greater resilience in the face of a more uncertain global environment.
Globally, 79% of respondents said the world feels more uncertain than it did three years ago. In Europe, that number rises to 86%, with factors like war, inflation, energy crises, and ongoing refugee issues contributing to this sense of instability. The report, based on a survey of over 2,500 business leaders and experts across the Design and Make industries—including architecture, engineering, construction, product design, manufacturing, and media and entertainment—highlights key challenges and opportunities shaping the future of these sectors. The top three challenges reported by companies in the Design and Make industries are attracting and retaining talent, managing costs, and adapting to the volatile global economy. The report also found that digitally mature companies are outperforming others, with the performance gap widening since 2020. "Autodesk has identified common challenges and opportunities across the industries that shape our world," said Andrew Anagnost, Autodesk president and CEO. "Businesses that have embraced digitization and data-driven decision-making are better positioned to thrive, even in times of uncertainty." Preparing for an Uncertain Future Despite the growing sense of uncertainty, nearly 60% of respondents believe their companies are well-prepared for future crises. Digitally mature organizations are significantly more confident in their readiness compared to others. "Digital and AI tools are essential for personalization and agility," said Matteo Barale, Co-CEO of PIX Moving, a start-up focused on autonomous vehicles. Talent Shortages Are a Major Hurdle Over 75% of respondents said the workforce has changed more in the past three years than in the previous 25. Attracting and retaining skilled workers is the top challenge for 48% of respondents, with 64% saying access to talent is hindering growth. Upskilling is seen as crucial, with 93% of respondents stating it's important for their companies. Future skills include technology proficiency, collaboration, and regulatory knowledge. "Our strong technology infrastructure helps us attract talent from around the world," said Jeremy Smith, CTO of Jellyfish Pictures, a visual effects company. Sustainability Is Becoming a Priority A growing consensus among respondents is that sustainability is not just an ethical choice, but a smart business move. Many see it as a potential revenue driver in the future. Key findings include: Companies are focusing on reducing waste, using recycled materials, and designing with sustainability in mind. "Digitization gives us a competitive edge," said Dr. Amy Hochadel of Connected Places Catapult. "As we face climate challenges, this will become even more critical." Digital Maturity Fuels Growth Digital transformation is helping companies reduce costs, boost innovation, and speed up product development. 79% of respondents believe digital tools will be essential for future growth. Digitally mature companies outperformed others in metrics like customer satisfaction and profit margins. They are also planning to increase investments in areas like project management technology, product innovation, and new service development.
