This past weekend, the Firefighter Combat Challenge took place in Tinley Park at the Tinley Park Convention Center located at 18451 Convention Center Drive, Tinley Park, IL 60477. The event drew attention from numerous municipal fire departments across the U.S. and Canada, with over 25 locations participating annually. The Challenge has now expanded globally, reaching countries like New Zealand, Germany, Argentina, Chile, and South Africa. The Challenge aims not only to promote firefighter fitness but also to showcase the demanding nature of firefighting to the public. Karl Klotz visited the event on Saturday and captured several compelling images showcasing the different aspects of the competition. One particularly engaging part of the event was the youth challenge. Young competitors got a taste of what firefighting entails by engaging in activities such as using miniature versions of the Keiser Force Machine. It was inspiring to see these young participants putting forth their best efforts. The final leg of the challenge involved rescuing a "victim," symbolized by dragging a dummy across the finish line. This segment truly highlighted the physical demands and teamwork required in firefighting. The adult Combat Challenge was equally impressive, featuring various rigorous tasks designed to mimic real-life firefighting scenarios. Competitors began by climbing a tower while carrying a hose load, then hauling additional hose to the top. They also had to use a mallet to operate the Keiser Force Machine, demonstrating strength and precision. Another crucial component of the challenge was dragging a charged 1 3/4" hose line back toward the starting line and opening the nozzle to hit a target, simulating the control needed in high-pressure situations. Finally, participants simulated a rescue by dragging a dummy to safety, completing the challenging sequence. In addition to the competitive elements, there was an impressive array of firefighting apparatus on display. The Rescue Remembrance Project showcased a restored FDNY Rescue 4 vehicle, paying tribute to those who have served. The MABAS Division 24 Fire Investigation Unit was also present, offering insights into the investigative side of firefighting. A standout piece was the Oak Forest 951, the Division 24 Mobile Communications Van, which plays a vital role in coordinating emergency responses. Other vehicles on display included Division 24's Haz Mat units and a Cook County Mobile Emergency Operations Command Center, emphasizing the extensive resources available to support firefighting operations. The MABAS Division 24 DECON unit was set up and on display as well, highlighting the importance of decontamination procedures in maintaining firefighter safety. These displays provided valuable education about the tools and strategies used in modern firefighting. Overall, the Firefighter Combat Challenge was a fantastic opportunity to witness the dedication, skill, and teamwork that define firefighting professionals.
