I just found out about Mike Dernulc, a beloved Hammond firefighter who passed away on March 28, 2015. He was 50 years old and had served the city of Hammond for two decades as a dedicated fireman. It's really sad to hear about his passing; he must have been an incredible person to work with and such a hero in his community.
I've been scrolling through these photos taken by Tim Olk at Mike's funeral. There’s something so powerful about seeing how many people came together to honor him. The first image shows a small but meaningful portrait of Mike Dernulc himself, capturing his kind face that I imagine brought comfort to so many during his service.
Then there are these poignant images from the funeral. One picture shows firefighters standing tall and proud, paying their respects. Another captures the emotional moment when Mike’s wife and son stood hand-in-hand, visibly heartbroken but surrounded by love and support from their firefighting family. You can almost feel the weight of grief mixed with pride in that image.
There’s also this striking shot of bagpipers marching solemnly during the ceremony. Their music must have filled the air with both sorrow and strength, honoring not only Mike but all firefighters who have made the ultimate sacrifice. It’s clear that Mike left behind an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.
Other photos depict rows of firefighters lined up perfectly, saluting their fallen brother. These images remind me how tight-knit communities like firefighters form bonds stronger than blood. They look out for each other in ways most people will never understand unless they’ve experienced it firsthand.
It’s hard to put into words just how much these photos convey—loss, remembrance, unity—but they do so beautifully. Mike wasn’t just a firefighter; he was someone who cared deeply about protecting others and building connections within his team. His legacy lives on through those who continue his mission today.
As I look at these pictures, I’m reminded of how important it is to cherish every moment we have with loved ones because life can change in an instant. Mike’s story serves as a humbling reminder of that truth.
