Over the last few years, Autodesk has grown significantly in San Francisco, expanding its presence to include the renowned Autodesk Gallery and the stunning One Market Street offices. These spaces highlight the innovative use of Autodesk software and cutting-edge sustainable design practices. This week marked another milestone in Autodesk's expansion within the Bay Area with the grand opening of its new 27,000-square-foot facility, the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9. This state-of-the-art space is designed to support Autodesk's mission of empowering people to imagine, design, and create a better world by fostering innovation through advanced software development, tool creation, app building, and collaborative workflows tailored for industries like manufacturing, life sciences, digital art, and the burgeoning maker movement. The event celebrating the launch of the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9, conveniently located along the picturesque San Francisco Bay and just a short stroll from Autodesk’s existing San Francisco offices, drew a distinguished crowd. Among those in attendance were Autodesk President and CEO, Carl Bass; San Francisco Mayor, Ed Lee; David Chiu, President of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors; Monique Moyer, Executive Director of the Port of San Francisco; and selected customers, partners, and representatives from both the city and the port. Nestled in this vibrant setting, the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9 offers an impressive array of facilities where employees and partners can engage in hands-on experimentation with various materials such as wood, metal, and composites. Projects can be executed using traditional construction methods, CNC prototyping, and 3D printing techniques for digital fabrication and additive manufacturing. A comprehensive list of the equipment available is available here. Access to the Workshop is granted exclusively to trained and certified Autodesk personnel and partners, serving as a vital component of the Autodesk Artist in Residence program. Additionally, the new location houses the Autodesk Consumer Group, a dedicated team focused on inspiring creativity across the globe by providing engaging tools and vibrant communities for children, hobbyists, emerging artists, and designers. The Instructables team, previously based in smaller quarters, is now happily consolidated under one roof with the broader consumer team. Autodesk Research's Bio/Nano/Programmable Matter group is also headquartered at the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9. This team will leverage a newly established meta-lab onsite to pioneer innovative tools that explore biology as a design medium, while also serving as a hub for testing Autodesk's scientific hardware initiatives. The unveiling of the Autodesk Workshop at Pier 9 has garnered attention from major media outlets, including the San Francisco Business Times and GigaOm. As someone who has been following Autodesk’s progress closely, I find this latest development particularly exciting. It reflects the company's commitment to pushing boundaries and fostering a culture of creativity and innovation. I am eager to see how this new facility will inspire future projects and collaborations.
