In an exciting move to bolster its commitment to the global maker community, Autodesk has announced that it will provide full access to its renowned Product Design Collection to over 1,000 registered Fab Labs worldwide. This announcement was made during the ongoing Fab 12 Conference in Shenzhen, China, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between Autodesk and the Fab Lab network. Fab Labs, which are part of a vast global network of innovation hubs, offer open access to advanced tools and cutting-edge digital fabrication equipment. Originally conceived as an outreach initiative by MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, these labs have evolved into a vibrant community of designers, educators, and creators. For more information about Fab Labs, visit the Fab Foundation website. Last summer, Autodesk introduced Tinkercad, 123D Circuits, and Fusion 360 to Fab Labs, while earlier this year, it extended its full suite of product design tools to participants of Fab Academy. Now, registered Fab Labs affiliated with the Fab Foundation can apply for a grant to gain complimentary access to these powerful tools via the Autodesk Fab Lab portal: www.autodesk.com/fablabs. Each participating Fab Lab will receive a grant covering 10 subscriptions to the Autodesk Product Design Collection. These subscriptions can be utilized either on-site or remotely by lab members, offering access to industry-leading software such as Fusion 360, Inventor Professional, AutoCAD, ReCap 360 Pro, 3ds Max, and 25GB of cloud storage. An extensive FAQ document with detailed grant information is available upon request on the application page. The news has sparked enthusiasm among Fab Labs globally. Andrew Gregson, Co-Founder and Director of Fab Lab London, expressed his excitement: “This partnership between Autodesk and the Fab Lab network is a natural fit. The ease of accessing essential Autodesk products with flexible licensing options will undoubtedly benefit the entire Fab Lab ecosystem and the broader maker movement. By positioning itself at the heart of this movement, Autodesk is fostering a global culture of innovation.” Hiroaki Umezawa, Chief Director of Fab Lab Shibuya, echoed similar sentiments: “The maker community in Japan is thriving, and Autodesk has long been a key supporter through its innovative software solutions. At Fab Lab Shibuya, we leveraged tools like A360 for collaborative design and Fusion 360 for CNC machining in projects for Maker Faire Tokyo. With Autodesk expanding its offerings into comprehensive digital manufacturing solutions, we’re delighted to hear about this development at Fab 12.” This initiative underscores Autodesk's dedication to empowering creators worldwide, bridging the gap between technology and hands-on innovation. It represents a significant step forward in democratizing access to advanced design tools, fueling creativity and growth across industries.
