According to Singapore’s “Lianhe Zaobao” report, triclosan is a common active ingredient in hand sanitizers, soaps, toothpastes and other hygiene products that can effectively kill bacteria and other microorganisms, but this compound has caused safety concerns in the United States in recent years.

Triclosan has been used for more than 40 years and was used primarily as a component of surgical cleaning fluids. Today, triclosan has been widely used in various antibacterial hygiene products. Research by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows that three-quarters of Americans over the age of five have triclosan in their urine.

The New York Times reported that some studies have shown that triclosan may alter the secretion of hormones in laboratory animals or cause bacteria to become resistant. Some consumer organizations and US congressmen therefore demanded that the addition of this compound to bactericidal products be prohibited. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, which conducted studies on the safety of triclosan, should have announced the results several months ago, but the study report has not been released until now.

Taylor, the senior vice president of research and development at Henkel, a German company that produces Dial Complete, said that there is currently no conclusive evidence that triclosan is harmful to the human body. On the contrary, a number of studies that have been submitted to US regulatory authorities show that triclosan is indeed effective in killing bacteria.

However, some manufacturers of hygiene products succumb to consumer pressure and no longer use triclosan. Reckitt Benckiser stopped using triclosan in three cleansing formulas on the grounds of "changes in consumer preferences."

Colgate-Palmolive also stopped adding triclosan to antibacterial dishwashing liquids and hand sanitizers on the grounds of “consumer habits change”. At the same time, the company’s Softsoap hand sanitizer also changed the formula. Stop using triclosan. However, the company’s highly effective toothpaste continues to use triclosan because it is resistant to gingivitis and is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
