In recent years, with the increase in the demand for fuel ethanol, more and more nitrogen fertilizers have been used by farmers to increase the production of corn crops. A recent study by Rice University in the United States showed that excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer does not allow corn stover to produce more fuel ethanol.

The study pointed out that corn stalk contains a lot of cellulose and lignin, but lignin does not contribute to the production of ethanol, and only cellulose is the main component of the production of fuel ethanol. Excessive application of nitrogen fertilizer mainly increased the content of lignin in corn stover, but the effect on the increase of cellulose was not obvious.

Rising energy prices and concerns over global warming have increased society’s demand for biofuels, particularly cellulosic ethanol. In order to increase the yield of corn crops, people often apply excessive nitrogen fertilizers. Morgan Gallagher, the lead author of the study, said that corn stover that can produce more fuel ethanol should contain a lot of cellulose and the right amount of lignin. He suggested that people should apply appropriate nitrogen fertilizer to maintain the proper ratio of lignin and cellulose in corn stover.

Excessive fertilization, in addition to increasing farmers' planting costs, also has an adverse effect on the environment. Gallagher said that the consequences of oversupply of nitrogenous fertilizers are likely to cause pollution when nitrates flow from farmland to nearby rivers, and it is also possible to generate nitrous oxide, a greenhouse gas, which has a greenhouse effect at least 300 times that of carbon dioxide.
