Brake market is still chaotic

The quality of the brake pads has always existed. In the past, most of them were counterfeit and “three-nothing” products that disrupted the order of the brake pads industry. However, some listed companies do not strictly abide by the quality and let these low-quality products flow into the market. Inflict a certain degree of harm on regular businesses and consumers.

In addition, the state does not have strict specifications on the production of brake pads. According to statistics, in 2010, China's friction material industry produced 426,000 tons of friction material products annually, the total output value was 8.53 billion yuan, and foreign exchange earned through exports was 3.18 billion yuan, of which about 80% of the total friction material for automobiles was used.

Due to the small size and large number of brake pads, the low-level redundant construction and price wars are relatively serious, affecting the development of the entire industry. The quality of most small-sized enterprises is not high, and they can only “grab the market” by price. Because of the backwardness of standards, domestic manufacturers can produce “qualified” products, and formal manufacturers are under great pressure. As the process flow is easy to grasp, the brake pads have become one of the most prominent products in various auto parts. It is understood that China now has 30% of brake pads are fake and shoddy products. This means that about one-third of the cars we use have hidden brake accidents.

Friction materials are mixed

For China's brake pads companies, we must rely on independent innovation and create our own brands to become one of the world's most popular brands, and to fully meet the different needs of the mainframe and aftermarket.

The most important performance index of the brake pads is the friction coefficient. The friction coefficient is closely related to the friction materials. However, in China's national standards, the raw materials used for the brake pads are not clearly defined. Only the safety performance of the finished brake pads must reach a certain target. . The standard blank gives some companies the opportunity to work on raw materials. Some companies use low-cost materials or scraps of large formal enterprises.

At present, the conventional friction materials in the world are classified into four categories: semi-metals, low-metals, ceramics, and organic materials. The development direction is mature semi-metal formulations, perfecting the formulation of small metals, and developing NAO formulations. However, China's asbestos (which is strictly prohibited by the state in 1999) still occupies a considerable proportion in certain areas, especially in the heavy-duty brake market. As asbestos fibers contain carcinogenic substances, many countries in the world have signed a treaty of refusal to use asbestos.

It is understood that in foreign markets, non-asbestos, low-metal, environmentally friendly friction materials (also known as NAO friction materials) have been introduced to the market more than ten years ago; some countries in Europe and the United States have already restricted the harmful heavy metal components in friction materials and Copper content legislation. In the foreseeable future, the content of asbestos and heavy metal components in friction materials will become a trade limitation for the export of friction materials to Europe and the United States. Therefore, the brake pad products that are noise-free, ash-free, and do not erode the wheel hub, have a long service life, are comfortable to brake and environmentally friendly, and completely eliminate asbestos are the right direction to follow the development trend of the world.

China's auto brake pad industry is facing two major transformations: environmental protection and high performance. In addition to meeting the requirements of low temperature, low wear, low wear rate, and stable friction coefficient, the environmentally-friendly high-performance brake pads should also have low vibration and low noise. The environmental protection and humanistic performance features such as less dust fall have put forward higher requirements for friction material formulation technology, raw material processing technology, compound preparation technology, hot press forming technology, heat treatment technology and follow-up processing technology.

Therefore, at the same time as technology research and development, domestic brake pads companies need to pay attention to environmental protection, reduce the use of harmful heavy metal components and asbestos in friction materials, and improve the international market competitiveness of domestic friction materials.

The country should set standards to raise the threshold

China has implemented a production license management system for the brake pad industry, but there have been many phenomena of unlicensed production or unqualified product quality. The source of the product has been lagged, the standard has lagged, and the threshold is too low. The lag in standardization has a great impact on the technical progress and product upgrades in the domestic brake pad industry, and the low production capacity concentration has become an unfavorable factor affecting the development of the industry.

According to industry insiders, there are a considerable number of brake pads manufacturing companies with poor equipment, low research and development capabilities, and a weak sense of quality. They rely on “price wars” in the low-end market to earn meagre profits. For example, large-scale enterprises all adopt fully automatic hot-press processing and have mature production technologies. Many small-scale enterprises only stay in the workshop stage due to lack of corresponding technologies. As a result, a large number of low-quality "three-nothing" brake pads will flood the market. Because of this, some people call these brake pads "kill" brake pads.

The problem of non-standard industry management order has always existed, because "people do not raise, officials are not investigated", this mentality provides unscrupulous manufacturers with a living space. Even if some unqualified manufacturers are pulled out and the local quality inspection department investigates and deals with them, it is only a matter of “handling” it in a superficial manner, which cannot solve the problem fundamentally.

Only by raising the threshold of industry standards, formulating national mandatory standards, and regulating industry management can we fundamentally solve the problems. This is particularly important for the sustainable development of the industry. Wang Yao believes that after the big waves of the market, the number of brake companies in China is reduced to about 50, which is an ideal state.
