The GRT-SRM cold rolling mill is designed to reduce the thickness of steel according to customer specifications. The hot-rolled strip passes back and forth between the rolls until it reaches the desired thickness. Similar to the pickle line, this cold rolling mill can handle two coils at a time—one coil waits while the other is being processed.
This mill is called "reversing" because the steel moves back and forth between the rolls, gradually reducing its thickness with each pass. Steelscape’s reversing cold rolling mill features closed-loop computerized quality control gauges, a unique characteristic for such mills. These gauges ensure tight tolerances for both thickness and shape, ensuring high-quality output.
Here's how the process works:
1. A fresh coil from the pickle line waits for the cold rolling process.
2. The active coil starts at the entry tension reel, where it is uncoiled and passed through the rollers.
3. A set of rolls applies pressure to the steel, making it thinner while maintaining its shape and width. The number of passes depends on the required thickness of the final product.
4. As the steel moves forward through the rolls, it is re-coiled onto the delivery tension reel. From there, it goes back through the rolls in reverse, further reducing the thickness.
5. Thickness gauges measure the steel’s thickness after each pass through the rolls.
6. Once the correct thickness is achieved, the steel is coiled again onto one of the tension reels and is ready to move into the metallic coating line.
