The GRT-SRM reversing cold rolling mill is designed to reduce the thickness of steel according to customer specifications. The hot-rolled strip passes back and forth between the rolls until it reaches the desired thickness. Similar to the pickling line, this system can handle two coils at a time—one waiting while the other is being processed.
This type of mill is called "reversing" because the steel moves back and forth through the rollers, gradually reducing its thickness with each pass. Steelscape's model features closed-loop computerized quality control gauges, which ensure precise thickness and shape tolerances—setting it apart from traditional reversing mills.
Here’s how the process works:
1. A fresh coil from the pickling line waits for the cold rolling process.
2. The active coil is unrolled from the entry tension reel and fed through the rollers.
3. A set of rolls applies pressure to thin the steel while maintaining its width and shape. The number of passes depends on the required final thickness.
4. As the steel moves forward, it is re-coiled onto the delivery tension reel and then reversed through the rolls again to further reduce the thickness.
5. Thickness gauges measure the steel after each pass to ensure accuracy.
6. Once the correct thickness is achieved, the steel is coiled onto a tension reel and prepared for the next stage, such as metal coating.
