How to Clean a Hydraulic Reservoir

Updated: December 22, 2023

Proper maintenance of hydraulic reservoirs is essential for the smooth operation and longevity of your equipment. Regular cleaning and flushing not only prevent system failures but also help maintain optimal performance. If neglected, dirt, moisture, and contaminants can build up, leading to costly repairs and downtime.

Below is a step-by-step guide on how to clean a hydraulic reservoir effectively, ensuring your system runs efficiently and safely for years to come.

1. Drain the System

Start by draining the hydraulic fluid while it's still warm. This helps remove any sediment or debris that may have settled at the bottom. Make sure to check all components—such as accumulators, cylinders, and filters—for any signs of blockage or damage during this process. If you notice cloudy fluid, it may be contaminated with water, so consider using desiccant air to dry out the system before proceeding.

2. Clean the Reservoir

Once the system is drained, use a lint-free cloth to wipe down the inside of the reservoir. Remove any loose paint chips, rust, or sludge that may have accumulated. Be thorough, as even small particles can cause issues later on. Avoid using materials that could leave behind fibers or residue.

3. Flush with Low-Viscosity Fluid

After cleaning, flush the reservoir with a low-viscosity fluid—such as a hydraulic cleaning solvent or a compatible flushing oil. This helps dislodge any remaining particles and ensures the system is free from contaminants. Perform a turbulent flush to shake up and remove stubborn deposits. Then drain the system completely and replace the filters once more.

4. Bleed and Pump the Vent

Fill the reservoir to about three-quarters full, then open the pressure pump or bypass valve. Run the pump for 15 seconds, then turn it off for 45 seconds. Repeat this cycle three times to ensure proper circulation and air removal. This step helps eliminate trapped air and ensures the system is ready for testing.

5. Test the Pump

With the pressure pump open, run it for one minute, then let it rest. Repeat this process a couple of times, making sure not to let the pump run for more than five minutes at a time. Lift the relief valve to confirm the system is properly flushed and allow it to rest for at least five minutes between cycles.

6. Start the Pump

Operate each actuator individually while monitoring the fluid return to the reservoir. After each actuator, shut down the system and let it sit. Keep an eye on the fluid level and refill it to approximately 50% to maintain proper operation.

7. Refill and Test the Reservoir

Refill the reservoir to 75%, then run the system in five-minute intervals, releasing any trapped air after each session. Continue running the system for 30 minutes straight, then replace the filters again. Check for any signs of contamination and repeat the filter change if needed.

8. Test for System Stability

After completing the cleaning process, run the system for no more than six hours to test its stability. This allows you to monitor for any irregularities without risking damage. Replace the filters one last time and take a fluid sample to confirm everything is functioning correctly.

By following these steps, you'll not only extend the life of your hydraulic reservoir but also improve the overall efficiency of your machinery. Once you're comfortable with the process, you can teach others how to perform this important maintenance task.
