HJ3 Composite Technologies has been awarded a contract by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) as part of a program supporting innovative infrastructure solutions. The company is one of 21 small businesses nationwide to receive this grant, which aims to develop new technologies that address pressing environmental and infrastructure challenges.
Specializing in high-strength carbon fiber and glass fiber systems, HJ3 focuses on restoring aging and deteriorating infrastructure. Their work includes reinforcing corroded water pipelines—often a costly and time-consuming task for municipalities and utility companies. With this EPA funding, the company is working on an automated process to apply carbon fiber materials more efficiently, significantly improving repair speed and reducing labor costs.
Jim Butler, CEO and founder of HJ3, shared his excitement about the opportunity. “We’re thrilled with this award and are actively developing a scalable solution,†he said. The current method of repairing pipelines typically allows workers to handle only 100 feet at a time. However, HJ3’s new system enables them to tackle up to 1,000 feet in a single session, boosting productivity by five times.
This innovation not only speeds up the process but also reduces the need for full pipeline replacements, offering long-term cost savings. Carbon fiber technology has been used in Japan since the 1980s, and HJ3 has successfully applied it in over 10,000 global projects. The company is now preparing for commercial deployment after a successful pilot phase.
The initial $100,000 grant will be used to finalize prototypes in Phase 1, expected to be completed by October. If successful, HJ3 hopes to secure an additional $300,000 for Phase 2, focused on bringing the product to market.
As infrastructure challenges continue to grow, solutions like HJ3’s offer a promising path forward—combining efficiency, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness. For more information about HJ3’s innovative infrastructure solutions, contact them at 1-877-303-0453 or visit their website.
