In other news, Mundelein has just wrapped up a meticulous full restoration project on their historic 1925 Stoughton pumper. Retired Mundelein Lieutenant Jim Carew spearheaded this ambitious restoration effort, rescuing the vehicle from potential scrapping. This restoration involved a complete frame-up rebuild, preserving 75% of the original components. The pumper boasts a 350-gallon-per-minute (GPM) pump and carries 150 gallons of water, making it a vital piece of firefighting history. Originally gifted to the village by Cardinal George Mundelein in gratitude for renaming the town to the Village of Mundelein, the pumper initially cost $7,500. The recent restoration work cost $65,000 and marks a significant investment in preserving local heritage. In its active service, this engine faithfully served the community for over two decades.
Below are images of the fully restored 1925 Stoughton pumper. These photos, also captured by Mark Gaunky, showcase the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into bringing this classic fire engine back to its former glory.
This restoration project not only preserves a piece of Mundelein's past but also serves as a testament to the dedication of those who work tirelessly to keep both modern and historical firefighting equipment in top condition.
