I just got back from the Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Fire Protection District's 75th Anniversary Open House, and it was such a great event! The atmosphere was lively and full of excitement as families and community members came together to celebrate this milestone.
The day was packed with demonstrations and activities that showcased the incredible work firefighters do every day. I saw some amazing photos taken by Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro that really captured the essence of the day. There were fire trucks everywhere, and kids were absolutely thrilled to get up close and personal with the equipment.
One of the highlights was the dive team demonstration. It was impressive to see how well-trained they are and how quickly they can respond to emergencies. There were also several extrication demonstrations using Holmatro cutters, which left everyone in awe. Watching them cut through a car like butter was both fascinating and a little nerve-wracking at the same time.
The live burn demonstration was another crowd favorite. Seeing the firefighters approach the flames with their hose lines was breathtaking. Families gathered around to watch, clearly impressed by the skill and precision of the team. There were so many great moments, like when a senior citizen snapped a photo with their smartphone or when a young boy got soaked with a hose—definitely made him smile!
It wasn’t all serious business though; there were plenty of fun activities for kids. A smoke house demonstration taught children about fire safety in an engaging way. I even saw a toddler enjoying himself on a fire truck while others tried their hand at sliding down a fire pole. There was cotton candy, popcorn, and other treats that added to the festive vibe.
I couldn't help but notice how proud the firefighters seemed as they posed with their families. One picture showed a fireman with his toddler son, looking like he couldn’t be prouder. Another had a fire chief getting dunked in a dunk tank—a lighthearted moment that brought laughter to everyone watching.
As the day wound down, I couldn’t help but reflect on how much this open house meant to the community. It wasn’t just about celebrating the past—it was about building connections and inspiring the next generation. If you want to see more photos from the event, check out shapirophotography.net.
It was a fantastic day filled with learning, laughter, and community spirit. I hope they continue these events for years to come because they truly bring people together.
