Sunday morning around 9:20 AM, Engine 62 responded to a working fire at 11259 South Michigan Avenue. Battalion 22 reported that the fire originated in the basement and quickly spread upwards, reaching the second floor and even the cockloft of this two-story apartment building located above a commercial structure. Truck 62 was assigned as RIT (Rapid Intervention Team). All photos below were taken by Erik Haak. --- As I arrived at the scene, Engine 62 already had their lines off, actively engaged in battling the flames. The intense smoke billowing from the structure made visibility challenging for the firefighters on the ground. In the image captured by Erik Haak, you can see how Engine 62 was positioned strategically to pump water onto the blaze. Meanwhile, Engine 75 secured a hydrant nearby, ensuring a steady water supply for the firefighting efforts. Their setup was crucial in maintaining pressure and efficiency during such critical operations. Erik's photograph captures this moment perfectly, highlighting the teamwork and preparation essential in managing fires like these. Further down the block, CFD’s crimson-colored aerial ladder truck, Truck 62, stood ready just in case an elevated approach became necessary. The positioning of the vehicle allowed for quick access if needed, showcasing the strategic planning behind each deployment. Inside the building, firefighters worked tirelessly to ventilate the roof, allowing trapped heat and smoke to escape. This not only helped improve conditions inside but also gave them better control over where the fire might spread next. The photo taken by Erik shows several firefighters standing on the roof amidst thick clouds of smoke—a testament to their bravery and dedication under pressure. Every detail matters when fighting fires of this magnitude; from securing hydrants to deploying specialized equipment like aerial trucks, every action contributes towards containing the situation safely and effectively. It’s always inspiring to witness firsthand how professionals handle emergencies with precision while keeping safety paramount. --- These images provide a glimpse into what happens behind the scenes during major incidents like this one. Each picture tells its own story about resilience, coordination, and professionalism displayed by Chicago Fire Department personnel. Special thanks go out to Erik Haak for sharing these invaluable snapshots documenting today's events.
