Monday evening around 10:30, a concerned citizen contacted the Northbrook Fire Department to report a fire in an abandoned two-story building close to the downtown train station. When the emergency teams arrived, they discovered flames engulfing the interior of the structure located at 1856 Walters Avenue. The severity of the situation prompted them to upgrade the alarm to a Code 4, indicating an active fire requiring immediate attention. The first responders on the scene included Northbrook Engines 10 & 11, Squad 12, Tower 12, Ambulance 10, and Battalion 11. Glenview Truck 14 also joined the efforts. As the fire intensified, additional units were dispatched, including Deerfield Truck 20, Highland Park Squad 34, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods Ambulance 52, and Wheeling Engine 42. Firefighters quickly managed to control the main blaze from the exterior using powerful water jets. Following this, they meticulously searched the building to ensure no extensions of the fire had occurred and that no one was trapped inside. Due to the prolonged activity at the site, a Box Alarm was eventually requested to bring in more support personnel. I was fortunate enough to be present and captured several images of the intense firefighting operation. Tim Olk and Larry Shapiro were also on hand, generously sharing their photos which vividly depict the bravery and dedication of these firefighters.
