Saturday morning brought a call for help when a Still & Box Alarm was triggered at a vacant, three-story courtyard building located at the intersection of 63rd and Stewart. Responding to the scene, Tim Olk captured several compelling images that offer a glimpse into the efforts of the Chicago Fire Department as they tackled the blaze.
The first image shows firefighters skillfully directing a hose line toward one of the upper floors, their focus clear as they worked diligently to contain the fire. Another shot captures Squad 5A operating in Sector 3 while an engine company guides a hose into a second-floor window, highlighting the coordinated teamwork essential in such situations.
Further along, multiple lines can be seen being deployed into the structure to fully extinguish any remaining flames, demonstrating the intensity and urgency of the firefighting operation. In another powerful image, Tower Ladder 37 maneuvers its platform into the courtyard area, showcasing the strategic positioning required to manage large-scale fires effectively.
An additional photograph features members of Squad 5 using an acetylene torch to cut through metal gates obstructing access to the courtyard. This image underscores the challenges faced by firefighters when obstacles hinder their path to the heart of the fire. Another striking photo reveals Tower Ladder 37’s main extending into the courtyard as Squad 5 firefighters labor to remove fencing—a testament to their perseverance in overcoming barriers.
As if the firefighting wasn’t demanding enough, other images depict the struggle to thaw a frozen ladder so it could be returned to the apparatus, a reminder of the extreme conditions under which firefighters often operate. Similarly, another photo shows firefighters attempting to retract an icy extension ladder using steam, capturing the ingenuity required to adapt tools in harsh environments.
The final image in this series is a group photo of the 18th Battalion and several firefighters, offering a rare moment of camaraderie amidst the chaos. It’s a poignant reminder of the bonds forged among those who face danger together.
