After midnight on Sunday, the Lake Zurich Fire Department received a call about a fire burning on the back deck of a home at 11 Rosewood Drive in Hawthorn Woods. When first responders arrived, they found flames already spreading from the deck into the house, with all occupants safely evacuated. The area lacks fire hydrants, so the incident was quickly escalated to a box alarm and then to a second alarm, bringing seven water tankers to the scene.
Wauconda’s tower ladder was initially deployed for an elevated master stream as the fire reached the attic. However, due to insufficient water supply, firefighters shifted to a defensive strategy using hand lines. To support operations, two portable water tanks were placed, and a tanker shuttle was established through a Lake Zurich engine.
The fire severely damaged the rear section of the attic and roof, with additional damage extending to several second-floor rooms. A local contributor shared early photos of the blaze, while Larry Shapiro provided multiple images and a video capturing key moments of the response.
