Excerpts from Chicago.cbslocal.com:

A high-rise fire broke out early Tuesday morning in the Loop, injuring six people. The incident occurred at 400 East Randolph Street, a building close to Maggie Daley Park, with the fire starting sometime after 12:30 a.m. According to initial reports, the blaze was confined to a single unit on the 32nd floor and appears to be electrical in origin, though the exact cause remains under investigation.

During the response, five firefighters were briefly trapped in an elevator but were safely rescued without injury. A 60-year-old woman and a 77-year-old man who reside on the 32nd floor are currently hospitalized in serious condition. A third individual was also taken to the hospital, but their injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Most of those injured suffered from smoke inhalation, which is a common concern in such incidents. Tragically, a resident’s pet cat also lost its life in the fire. Firefighters managed to bring the flames under control by around 1:30 a.m., and most residents have since been allowed to return to the building.
