The Daily Herald has published a story highlighting growing tensions between the Barrington Fire Department and the Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District. The conflict centers around a recent house fire that occurred just outside of Barrington's city limits, raising questions about emergency response protocols and interdepartmental cooperation.

According to Barrington Fire Chief Jim Arie, the department is questioning the procedures used by the newly established Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District following the April 9 fire at 1025 S. Grove St., which was just blocks from the village’s border.

Arie stated that his firefighters could have reached the scene in under three minutes, whereas the first engine from Barrington Countryside arrived five minutes and 34 seconds later. The Barrington station is less than two miles away, while the Countryside unit had to travel more than 3.5 miles.

“Fire doubles in size every minute,” Arie explained, noting that the blaze started in the garage but had already spread to the entire house by the time the Countryside crew arrived. He emphasized that the two-minute delay made a significant difference in the outcome.

“It’s unusual for neighboring departments not to coordinate during an emergency,” Arie said. “This situation is unfortunate for everyone involved, especially the residents.”

Barrington Countryside Fire Chief Jeffrey Swanson denied Arie’s claims, insisting that his team handled the call appropriately. He praised the efforts of his firefighters, stating that their quick response helped prevent approximately $200,000 in property damage.

Swanson also explained that it’s standard practice for dispatchers to notify nearby departments based on pre-established aid agreements. According to the current protocol, Barrington is not among the first agencies contacted when a fire occurs south of Lake-Cook Road. Instead, departments from Carpentersville, East Dundee, Hoffman Estates, Cary, and Long Grove are prioritized.

While the Barrington Fire Department is listed in the second group, Swanson said the district is satisfied with its current system. However, he added that they will review the list if necessary. “If we need to change it, we will,” he said.

Thanks, Dan
