Last Wednesday, November 9, we hosted a webinar titled "How to Make Survey-Grade 3D Models with the Elios 3 and GeoSLAM Connect." It was one of our most engaging sessions to date, with nearly 1,000 registrations and an impressive number of questions from attendees. Due to time constraints, we couldn’t answer every query during the live session, so we’ve compiled this detailed follow-up to address all the questions you asked. Below is a menu to help you navigate through the answers: - **Questions related to accuracy and precision testing** - **GeoSLAM and data processing questions** - **Elios 3 operations and best practice questions** - **LiDAR-related questions** - **LiDAR data collection questions** If you're interested in learning more about the two key tests we discussed during the webinar, check out these white papers: - [Testing Global Accuracy and Georeferenced Accuracy in 3D Mapping with the Elios 3 and GeoSLAM Connect](#) - [Testing Local Accuracy and System Precision in 3D Mapping with the Elios 3 and GeoSLAM Connect](#) Want to watch the full recording? The results are based on scans taken without any targets. These pads are used to create a consistent feature for comparison between the Elios 3 scan and a reference scan, but they don’t contribute to improving the actual accuracy of the scan itself. **Q: Is it possible to improve the accuracy, maybe with a scanner that has greater accuracy?** A: Future software and hardware updates may enhance performance, though we can't provide specific timelines yet. The latest Ouster sensor offers better precision and range, and future GeoSLAM upgrades could include non-rigid registration of GCPs, which might further improve accuracy. **Q: Is the accuracy error of Flyability due to the flight or the device capabilities?** A: The error comes from multiple factors, including the sensor and mapping algorithms, the drone’s flight path (such as speed and coverage), the method of aligning the scan to the reference model, and how target centroids are selected for error calculation. **Q: The flight time for the Elios 3 is 8.5 minutes but the accuracy results shown were based on three flights—so how is the accuracy based on one flight?** A: Each 8.5-minute flight covered the entire asset and produced a unique scan. Each scan was evaluated independently for accuracy. --- ### GeoSLAM and Data Processing Questions **Q: Can I create a textured mesh out of this data?** A: While GeoSLAM doesn’t support this natively, other 3D tools can convert the point cloud into a mesh. **Q: Would it be possible to export a timestamped trajectory and point cloud to use inside TerraMatch for time-based corrections?** A: Yes, both the point cloud and timestamped trajectory can be exported. You can also reprocess the data in GeoSLAM Connect. **Q: Can you combine your 3D model with picture recognition or tags?** A: Tags are being explored, but there's no official timeline for this feature yet. **Q: After merging multiple flights within GeoSLAM Connect, can the file be exported to Autodesk Recap Pro? Or can GeoSLAM Connect mesh the point cloud?** A: Yes, the file can be exported to E57 for CAD import. With GeoSLAM Draw, you can also mesh the point cloud or export it to CAD formats. **Q: Can I generate a colorized point cloud?** A: The point clouds from GeoSLAM Connect are colorized based on LiDAR intensity, which gives some texture but isn’t real RGB color. --- ### Elios 3 Operations and Best Practice Questions **Q: How can we receive training to develop skills to not only fly the Elios but to learn more about case use scenarios?** A: Flyability offers AAIM training that covers various use cases. Learn more and enroll [here](#). **Q: Is there a way to use a tether system for recovery of the drone?** A: We generally do not recommend tethers except in very specific environments like silos or ore passes, where tangling risks are high. **Q: How does it behave in underground mines if it flies below sea level?** A: The Elios 3 can operate from -3,000m to 5,000m altitude. At high altitudes, special precautions are needed due to low air density. **Q: What is the max distance with the Range Extender? How far can the Elios 3 fly from the pilot?** A: In straight lines, the drone can fly up to 500 meters. However, symmetrical environments like sewers can challenge the LiDAR’s performance. **Q: Can the drone be bought without the LiDAR payload?** A: Not at the moment, but the LiDAR can be removed by users when it’s not needed. --- ### LiDAR Questions **Q: What is the distance limit of the LiDAR?** A: The maximum range is 30 meters, but for optimal accuracy, we recommend flying within 10 meters. **Q: What is the file extension of the LiDAR?** A: The raw format is .bag, but after processing, you can export to .las, .laz, .ply, .txt, and .p57. **Q: How many points per second does the LiDAR sensor create?** A: 300,000 points per second. **Q: Is the LiDAR single or multiple return?** A: The OS0 sensor is multi-echo and returns the strongest echo. --- ### LiDAR Data Collection Questions **Q: How do you control the Elios 3’s flight speed during data collection to keep it constant?** A: In Assist mode (ATTI), the drone won’t exceed 1.5 m/s, which is ideal for capturing LiDAR data. **Q: About pipe inspections, how can I prevent a wrong SLAM result?** A: Pipes are highly symmetrical, making them challenging for GeoSLAM. Include features like bumps or corners in the field of view, and consider flying sideways for better results. **Q: Can I control the scanner field of view used to create a point cloud in GeoSLAM Connect?** A: This feature hasn’t been implemented yet, but it’s under consideration for future updates.
