Last week at SIGGRAPH 2017 in Los Angeles, CA, the Autodesk Media & Entertainment team unveiled a series of exciting updates across their Media & Entertainment Collection. These updates span several key products including Maya, Shotgun, Arnold, 3ds Max, and Flame, all aimed at enhancing production efficiency for films, TV shows, games, and immersive experiences. The latest releases incorporate user-requested features and improvements that connect creative workflows and teams, enabling them to bring captivating stories to global audiences more effectively.
As augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) continue to grow, along with the steady influx of new projects from platforms like Netflix and Amazon, animation and visual effects studios are experiencing unprecedented demand. Our focus remains on empowering our customers with faster, more efficient tools to meet rising project demands within tighter deadlines and budgets. All the showcased tools at SIGGRAPH aim to streamline production while providing artists with the resources needed to tackle complex creative challenges. Below are some highlights:
**Media & Entertainment Collection**
The latest iteration of the Media & Entertainment Collection amplifies the value, flexibility, and simplicity of the previous version. Among the new subscription perks are Arnold 5-Packs (now available), Cloud Rights, and SketchBook for Enterprise. These additions underscore Autodesk's commitment to supporting diverse creative needs.
**Maya 2018**
With Maya 2018, character creation becomes smoother, faster, and more enjoyable. The motion graphics toolkit has been expanded with dynamics and new instancing capabilities. Additionally, the latest version of Arnold, featuring enhanced features and core architecture improvements, is now integrated. For a comprehensive list of updates, check out this link.
**Shotgun**
Shotgun continues to prioritize seamless media collaboration for studios of all sizes. Recent updates include two plug-and-play integrations designed to boost artist productivity, updates to RV, and a new single sign-on option. Administrators will find it easier to maintain site performance with smart data retention and community-driven enhancements like an improved action menu and self-site restart capability.
**Arnold v5.0.1**
Building on the robust foundation of Arnold 5.0, this version introduces AOV shaders for cryptomatte workflows, thin film support for standard surface shaders, and numerous other optimizations. Available alongside the latest versions of Maya and 3ds Max, or as a standalone plugin, Arnold also offers free access to educational institutions via the Autodesk Education Portal.
**3ds Max 2018.1**
The updated 3ds Max introduces VR authoring tools tailored for design visualization professionals, along with 3ds Max Interactive—a VR engine simplifying the creation of immersive architectural visualizations. Other notable enhancements include refined user experience and UV unwrapping tools. Visitors to our booth got a sneak peek at a 3ds Max to VR Workflow demo and a Vision Series session highlighting Smart Content—features that dynamically populate scenes based on environmental interactions.
**Flame Family 2018.2**
This release equips artists with powerful new tools to increase productivity and expand integration possibilities within pipelines. Key additions include Pybox, a Python-scriptable tool for image processing through external renderers; projector functionality with mapping and contextual menus; smart merge for streamlined conform workflows; and command-line control over the batch environment.
