I was just on site at the Still & Box Alarm in Chicago on February 11, 2017, and I managed to capture some intense photos of the situation. The heavy smoke pouring out of that warehouse was absolutely overwhelming. It was one of those moments where you couldn’t help but stand back in awe of the sheer force of nature combined with human error.
The first photo I took shows the massive plume of smoke billowing out as far as the eye could see. It was so thick that it almost felt like you could reach out and touch it. You could tell from the image that the firefighters were working hard to contain the situation, but the scale of the fire was immense.
Then there’s another shot from a slightly different angle, where you can really see the intensity of the flames licking at the building. It's haunting how the smoke seems to take over everything in its path. In the next photo, you can see firefighters working diligently, trying to prop open a door to get inside. Their focus and determination were evident even through the chaos.
Another powerful image is of Chicago Fire Department’s Mobile Ventilation Unit 923 parked nearby, ready to assist in any way possible. These vehicles play such a critical role during fires, helping to clear out smoke and improve visibility for the firefighters inside.
There’s also a photo showing the sheer magnitude of the scene—firefighters everywhere, equipment scattered about, and the ever-present danger of the spreading fire. It’s a stark reminder of how dangerous these situations can be and how brave these men and women are to step into the line of fire every day.
Finally, one last picture captures the aftermath, or perhaps it was taken during the firefighting efforts. Either way, it highlights the relentless work of the firefighters who were determined to bring this blaze under control. Every single one of these images tells a story of courage, teamwork, and the relentless battle against an unpredictable adversary.
These photos were taken by my good friend Tim Olk, who was there with me that day. His keen eye for detail and his ability to capture these moments make these images all the more impactful. Each photo serves as a testament to the power of fire and the dedication of those who fight it.
